FREEDOM

As a fashion designer, I have had many mentors and famous designers that have

inspired me. I recently watched a documentary on Hulu called “Diane Von Furstenberg:

A Women in Charge”. DVF is not only an inspiration to me as a designer, but also as a

person. While watching the show, I learned that her mother was a Holocaust survivor.

She was a tough and sometimes cold parent but taught Diane many valuable lessons.

“Fear is not an option” was often said to Diane as she navigated the trials and

tribulations of her childhood and teenage years. DVF has lived by this mantra, which is

apparent when she speaks about her life. No matter what, even if her choices could be

perceived as selfish, her decisions are hers alone. She is not bound by the constraints

that many of us allow to guide our ships, such as the opinions of others, religious

doctrines, and guilt. Diane (pronounced DeAnne by friends and family) the Jewish

daughter of a Holocaust survivor from moderate means, married into German Royalty.

She openly accepted her husband’s bisexuality and remained close to him until the day

he died of AIDS. She had left him to forge her way when his expectations of her as a

wife infringed on her sense of freedom. She went on to create the iconic wrap dress,

selling 25,000 pieces a week after its initial launch.

Freedom: the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or

restraint

Freedom is a word that resonates strongly with me. But what does it mean? We just

celebrated our country’s Independence Day and each of us has the power and freedom

to pursue our OWN happiness. Freedom can be euphoric and daunting at the same

time. While you oversee your destiny, whatever you decide to do, wherever you go with

your life, you and you alone are responsible. There is no one else to blame for missteps

along the way, but you are also the author of your own story. Add “fear is not an option”

to your daily mindset and you will be unstoppable.

Though, as I write this, I am watching the news coverage of a shooting at a political

rally. With freedom comes great responsibility. Without that responsibility, we all risk

losing our unalienable rights. And our FREEDOM. Be kind, be compassionate, be

human.
