After three weeks of deadline overload at work, I decided to take a day to do absolutely nothing.  Charlie and Phoebe texted to see if I wanted to go for a hike, but I just needed to chill.  I slept until 10:00 am and then Ryley and I took a leisurely walk down the path to Main Street. We casually strolled while checking out store windows and people-watching. I popped into the local coffee shop and grabbed a caramel macchiato. I slowly savored every sip, while sitting on the bench outside and petting Ryley’s belly. This is the life! I absorbed my surroundings, took a deep breath, and closed my eyes to remember this moment of pure joy.

The art of doing nothing is an underappreciated skill in our culture of go, go, go. Any second of not being productive is viewed as laziness, yet learning to be still can foster a more balanced, peaceful, and enriched life. The Italians call it “Dolce far niente” (the sweetness of doing nothing). I LOVE that!

Taking time to do nothing allows your mind to “reset” relieving the constant pressure of tasks, responsibilities, and information overload. It gives your brain a break, lowering cortisol levels and reducing feelings of stress. When the mind is free from structured thinking or problem-solving, it can wander and make unexpected connections, which can spark creativity and fresh ideas. Many creative breakthroughs occur during moments of relaxation or idleness. By stepping away from work or obligations, you give your brain time to recharge, allowing for better focus and efficiency when you return to tasks. Doing nothing encourages a state of being present in the moment. I have consistently practiced this activity or lack thereof to recharge and reboot after bouts of workaholic frenzy!

Now I am going to practice what I preach and take an afternoon nap. 😊

Until Next Time,

❤️

Olivia
